Late 1920s or early 1930s dress a jet black crepe dress. The collar and jabot, peplum, and long gigot sleeves are beautifully trimmed with luxurious, pleated silk satin ribbon. Two enormous real shell buttons decorate the bodice. Triple vertical darts, a defined waist, and self-sash to wear tied or wrapped and buttoned. Covered buttons at cuffs and upper back. Snaps and hooks&eyes at the side. Unlined.
This beautiful dress has a wonderfully romantic backstory. The original owner wore it on her first date with her future husband in 1932. It was good luck for her, and will surely continue to be for you! Comes with provenance card from a previous exhibition loan.
Fiber/Care: no tags, rayon crepe with silk trim, dry-clean only
Condition: the upper layer of the silk collar and edges of the bodice bow are shattering, although the black-on-black makes it inconspicuous. eventually, you'll want to replace these bits. the rest of the dress, including all the pleated trim, is sound and strong. the large button on the back, which we assume matched the two on the front, was missing. we've provided a period-correct, antique art deco replacement.
