40s New Look Platter Hat in Brown Horsehair Crinoline
From the 1940s, a New Look wide-brim platter hat of lacey brown horsehair, with maroon ribbon trim. Interior grosgrain band. Elastic strap goes beneath your hair at back, to help hold the hat in place, although a hat pin would also help (read: a good excuse to collect them). From my personal collection.
Labels: No manufacturer label remains, only New York Creation label (collab between the New York Dress Institute and the ILGWU, intended to show fair labor practices and protect designs from being hijacked, in use 1941-1955)
Materials: synthetic horsehair crinoline braid, ribbon feels like silk
Condition: no flaws to note beyond slightest signs of wear and age. I'm fairly certain I replaced the elastic band.
Dimensions:
interior circumference at grosgrain band: 18"/45.5cm
(note that hat sits atop the head and doesn't need to "fit" head size)
diameter: 15.5"/39cm
brim: 5"/12.5cm at front, 4.5"/11.5cm at back
crown height: 2"/5cm
