Antique French Silk Hand Fan Round Fireside Face Screen

From the 19th or very early 20th century, a round hand fan, called a face screen, intended to shield the face from excessive heat. 

• Silk, decorated with renaissance-era figures playing games, edged in paper
  
• Gold-tone, turned wood handle
• Pink-and-white striped silk bow

Labels: "Herold & Cie" -- research indicates this was a French printer ("imprimeur") of posters and other art in the 19th and early 20th century. They were located at 131 Boulevard St-Michel, Paris.

 round fan is about 7" diameter, total height about 17"

Condition: This round hand fan is usable and not falling apart, but is delicate and could easily be damaged. It has an existing split and an area of staining/wear, as shown. Best for occasional/costume use, or for display. The back is undecorated, and could easily be reinforced with fabric and/or acid-free card stock to make it sturdier for more frequent use and to prevent additional damage.
