Lovely black dress of highest-quality, silky rayon. Colored sequins subtly highlight the rose-and-daisy pattern, front and back. V-neck has gathered sides, creating a feminine sweetheart shape. Slightly puffed short sleeves, flowy skirt. Metal Merita side zip. Snap bra stays. Most likely started out with shoulder pads. From 1944-46.

Some background: Peggy Roth, widow of blouse and shirt manufacturer Joseph Roth (d. 1920), was already well-established in fashion circles when she moved her shop from Madison Avenue to 400 Park Avenue in 1941. Her gowns were described in the New York Times fashion pages when she showed her collections for well-heeled attendees at the St. Regis and Plaza hotels.

Fiber/Care: unknown, feels like fine-quality rayon, dry-clean

Condition: several sequins are missing, but there are no obviously bare areas. there are repairs to several small tears on one sleeve and one vertical tear at the center back. wearable as is, but could be better camouflaged with a do-over by a qualified seamstress. the price reflects these slight imperfections, which do not detract from the beauty and quality of this lovely dress.
